Our Industries - Transport
Our current economic downturn aside, the demand across National Rail, London Underground and Metro services continue to grow with strong projections. At the same time there is environmental pressure for modal shift for both car passengers and freight to provide a greener alternative. High speed lines are back on the agenda and following the success of high speed rail services in other countries, the Government have commissioned a feasibility study on High Speed 2 to be delivered by the end of 2009. There is therefore significant infrastructure investment required to provide services to meet this demand.

Recent months have seen the final determinations from the Office of Rail Regulation (ORR)provide £35Bn to Network Rail over the next five years and in July 2008 parliamentary approval was granted for the £15.9Bn Crossrail project. In the Meantime, whilst there are clearly funding challenges, investment continues in London Underground delivering new trains, new track, new signalling and major station refurbishment.

On 1st April 2009 Network Rail entered Control Period 4 (CP$) with key challenges being:
  • Safety improvements in the risk of death or injury to passengers and rail workers from accidents
  • Improved reliability for passengers and freight
  • Improved availability with the delivery of the "7 day railway" and requirement to reduce passenger disruptions due to engineering works
  • Efficiency improvements of 21% by 2014.

Successful delivery will need further development of partnership working and reduced planning and decision times.

The Train Operating Companies continue to operate in one of the highest profile service sectors. They operate and maintain expensive capital assets in line with demands to meet increasing service performance, operating timetables, stringent safety, regulatory and compliance measures. All of this demanded in an environment where the drive to reduce operating costs was never more rigorous than now when it is further compounded by the impact of the economic downturn and the related decrease in passenger revenues.
Our Progress - Network Rail
Network Rail have now been reliant upon MIMS as their Asset and Work Management system across a range of asset types for several years and have, in 2006, undertaken an upgrade to Ellipse.  We have worked in close partnership with Network Rail, providing consultancy on exploiting the new features and functionality that will be available to them in the latest version of the product.

Our Mobile Working solution - FDCS ® is currently being used by the Signals and Telecommunications discipline for the issuing and closing of work orders and there are plans to further utilise the system across a wide cross section of the business.  The integration of Ellipse with FDCS ® has enabled significant benefits to be realised by Network Rail in the efficiency and effectiveness of their workforce.

Our Progress - Train Operating Companies
We have been working closely with many of the UK's Train Operating Companies over many years and in particular we have been working with their 'mission critical' rolling stock maintenance operations. the daily changes they face in keeping the rolling stock in service and minimising the time spent in the depots are numerous and relentless.

The days of a TOC having a fleet profile that contains spare sets, vehicles or units "just in case" is no longer an affordable option, leaving many TOCs struggling to meet these daily challenges with their current ways of working; existing operating practises that are constrained by the use of legacy tools and support systems.
Recognising this we have supplemented our understanding and knowledge of the sector by investing in the design and pre-configuration of a purpose built maintenance management solution for rolling stock. Titled the Rolling Stock Implementation Framework (RSIF), it provides an "out-of-the-box" modular solution to enable a speedy, least risk and least cost solution for the introduction of integrated, modern support tools to underpin new ways of working in maintenance planning and depot operations.

Our Progress - Transport in London
We work closely with the transport companies operating within London and have successful partnerships with Transport for London (TfL), Metronet and TubeLines.

Our work with London Underground Ltd has included an assessment of the organisations compliance with PAS 55. The project involved an appraisal of how the standard is being managed through the Public Private Partnership arrangements.

Within Metronet, we continue to build on our existing Ellipse implementation, providing our customer with an Enterprise Asset Management capability across rolling stock, stations, signalling, civils and over 200km of underground track. Our work supports a vital service used by some two million commuters every day.

For London’s surface transport, we are working on long-term project with TfL to implement a new mobile technology solution for enforcing London’s Red Routes. In a turnkey solution that will run to the end of the decade, we currently provide a fully managed service to support 850 active mobile devices operated from 25 locations around the capital.

In London, the award of the 2012 Olympic Games is modifying the expectations on all transport services. Pressure on meeting deliverables will inevitably rise as the games draw nearer each year.

We have also seen marked changes within the airline industry, with the number of airlines that lease their aircraft continuing to grow.
