Our Industries - Transport
Throughout the past year, the main challenges for our transport customers related to cost reduction, safety, quality of service and shareholder value at a time when industry and regulatory change continued to grip the sector.

On the regulatory front, the enactment of the 2005 Railways Act has continued to streamline the rail sector with functions of the now defunct Strategic Rail Authority having largely been transferred to successor bodies. This includes including Passenger Franchise Specification which now rests with the Department for Transport. On April 1st 2006, responsibility for health and safety policy and enforcement of the railways transferred from the HSE to the Office of Rail Regulation.

During a similar period, Network Rail’s performance improvement strategy has been driven forward reflecting its position as a single point of responsibility for industry performance – a role established in April 2005 to ensure more effective management of the rail network as a whole.

For the Train Operating Companies, the past year has seen further amalgamation of a number of franchises. Since 2004, this initiative has delivered significant efficiency improvements through reducing the overall number of different operators. Many existing TOCs are now absorbed in re-bidding for their franchises, or evaluating how to position themselves for re-modelled ones.

Our Progress - Network Rail
Network Rail have now been reliant upon MIMS as their Asset and Work Management system across a range of asset types for several years and have, in 2006, undertaken an upgrade to Ellipse.  We have worked in close partnership with Network Rail, providing consultancy on exploiting the new features and functionality that will be available to them in the latest version of the product.

Our Mobile Working solution - FDCS is currently being used by the Signals and Telecommunications discipline for the issuing and closing of work orders and there are plans to further utilise the system across a wide cross section of the business.  The integration of Ellipse with FDCS has enabled significant benefits to be realised by Network Rail in the efficiency and effectiveness of their workforce.

In addition we have been advising Mersey Tunnels on strategic developments in asset management practices.

We have also been working closely with the UK’s Train Operating Companies and several Passenger Transport Executives  to determine the business benefits arising from adopting an enterprise asset management approach.

Our Progress - Transport in London
We work closely with the transport companies operating within London and have successful partnerships with Transport for London (TfL), Metronet and TubeLines.

Our work with London Underground Ltd has included an assessment of the organisations compliance with PAS 55. The project involved an appraisal of how the standard is being managed through the Public Private Partnership arrangements.

Within Metronet, we continue to build on our existing Ellipse implementation, providing our customer with an Enterprise Asset Management capability across rolling stock, stations, signalling, civils and over 200km of underground track. Our work supports a vital service used by some two million commuters every day.

For London’s surface transport, we are working on long-term project with TfL to implement a new mobile technology solution for enforcing London’s Red Routes. In a turnkey solution that will run to the end of the decade, we currently provide a fully managed service to support 850 active mobile devices operated from 25 locations around the capital.

In London, the award of the 2012 Olympic Games is modifying the expectations on all transport services. Pressure on meeting deliverables will inevitably rise as the games draw nearer each year.

We have also seen marked changes within the airline industry, with the number of airlines that lease their aircraft continuing to grow.
